Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Project
PLEAC has received funding from the Department of Justice for the Preventing Sexual Harassment in the Workplace Project. This initiative will help connect PLEI (Public Legal Education Information) organizations across Canada to make workplaces harassment free by providing complainants of workplace sexual harassment with access to legal advice when dealing with workplace sexual harassment, and by increasing public awareness and knowledge about sexual harassment in the workplace.

The project will increase awareness and understanding of workplace sexual harassment in the Northwest Territories. Public education and information resources will be developed on workplace sexual harassment, specifically targeting employers and employees, and will include information on the legal framework, rights and obligations, how to prevent and address it, and what resources are available. Training workshops will be delivered in all six regions of the territory, encompassing 33 communities. Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers will be engaged to support the development of the resources and delivery to ensure cultural appropriateness and respect throughout the project.

20 legal clinics from across Ontario will take a coordinated approach to providing legal information and advice and public legal education on sexual harassment in the workplace. They include 8 legal clinics from South-West Ontario (Elgin-Oxford/Huron-Perth, Windsor, Chatham-Kent, Brant County, Gray-Bruce, Waterloo, Niagara and Sarnia), 8 legal clinics from Eastern/Central Ontario (Northumberland, Belleville, Oshawa, Peterborough, Perth, Renfrew, Simcoe/Haliburton/Kawartha Lakes and the Vanier Francophone clinic in Ottawa) and 4 from Northern Ontario (Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, Keewaytinok, Sudbury and Kinna-aweya in Thunder Bay). Resources being available across Ontario is especially important to residents living in rural or remote communities. These 20 clinics will use federal resources to produce legal education materials, hire staff to deliver the legal advice and services to clients as well as organizing and presenting at various educational sessions.

This project will inform newcomer employees in Victoria, British Columbia on sexual harassment in a workplace and how to address it through training/workshops and outreach. This project will also increase awareness among employers who employ newcomers from a cultural perspective.

White Ribbon will partner with CSL Group, Sunwing Travel Group, and the Barbra Schlifer Clinic to implement sexual harassment prevention and responses within sector-specific workplaces. The project will adapt, develop, and disseminate PLEI resources, increase and promote awareness of workplace sexual harassment, and build the capacity of industry professionals through training on workplace sexual harassment.

WomanACT and the Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology will develop partnerships with employers in the STEM sectors, to improve access to legal supports and trauma-informed resources for victims of sexual harassment in STEM industry workplaces across Canada. The project will seek to better understand the needs, barriers, and opportunities related to preventing and responding to sexual harassment in the workplace. Resources and training will be provided to workplaces to improve workplace policies, practices, and culture.
