Guidelines for Better Legal Workshops: Best Practices for PLE Presentations

Access to Justice Week (A2J Week) brings together a range of justice sector stakeholders to develop meaningful, public-centred solutions that advance systemic change in the justice system. OJEN is pleased to support A2J Week in 2021 with activities for students, teachers, community workers, and legal professionals. Public legal education (PLE) is an important part of access to justice. OJEN and Public Legal Education Association of Canada (PLEAC) are pleased to support A2J Week by presenting a 90-minute webinar for legal professionals who are interested in offering legal education workshops for the public. In this session, experienced PLE professionals will share OJEN’s Guidelines for Better Legal Workshops, adding practical advice, teaching strategies, useful resources, and other insights.

This program contains 1 hour of EDI Professionalism Content (Law Society of Ontario).

This session is designed for legal professionals (including lawyers, paralegals, and others) and legal professionals-in-training (e.g. law students).

Speaker Bio

Hanna Kaploun is a licensed paralegal and is the bilingual Project Coordinator for the Public Legal Education Association of Canada (PLEAC). Hanna was onboarded in January 2020 and oversees a 4.5 year project funded by the Department of Justice of Canada Hanna supports knowledge sharing among 40+ organizations that received funding for projects focusing on the prevention of sexual harassment in the workplace. Hanna leads PLEAC's webinar programming and provides coordination and administrative support to the PLEAC Board of Directors.

Jessica Reekie is a lawyer and first joined OJEN in 2008 as a Program Manager, developing public legal education programs and resources for newcomer youth. Jessica later became OJEN’s Director of Programs, where she oversaw all of their public legal education work with vulnerable and marginalized youth. In 2014, Jessica became OJEN’s Executive Director and serves as the Vice-President of the Board of Directors for PLEAC.

Michelle Thompson is a lawyer and joined OJEN in 2013. In 2021, Michelle helped launch OJENs new Department of Capacity Building and Engagement to deepen and strengthen their engagement with law students and training for legal professionals. As its inaugural Director, Michelle is working with a small but mighty CBE team to bring more responsive, quality learning experiences to all the lawyers, paralegals, judges, community workers, social workers, and post-secondary students who want to support and educate youth in their local communities.

Enisone Kadiri, pronouns she/her, is the Acting Director of Outreach programs at OJEN. Eni has a background in social justice advocacy as well as youth and community development and engagement. For over 10 years, Enisone has been working at OJEN, specifically in the Outreach department, developing and delivering public legal education programs for vulnerable youth and their trusted intermediaries.
